How has your upbringing impacted your sense of style today?
I felt amazing about my style; wearing anything a bit “different” in upstate New York made me feel like I must be the coolest person alive from here.
Encouraged and applauded are how I would describe people perceiving my fashion styles growing up. I come from Saratoga Springs, a smaller town in New York. What I chose to wear never made me feel like an outlier, but a star. To locals, trying new trends I’d see online seemed like I’d made it all by myself. To support these endeavors, I’d get new items from some vintage markets and fairs Saratoga offered. The fairs were untapped vendors of unique, local pieces that inspire my thrifting and curating to this day.
As a Junior, what are some fashion changes you’ve seen on Tulane’s campus?
I didn’t have a lot of room in my suitcase to get clothes from abroad, but people are always sporting new pieces when they go back to campus.
With the new classes, I notice that people are really coming into their own style. Now that Tulane sees students from more states and countries, they are bringing their own culture and vibe. For the people who wear sweats and hoodies to class, I support that. For the people who doll themselves up with a cute, new look for class, I support that, too. Whatever makes you feel the most comfortable and confident floats my boat. I went abroad last semester, and my fellow Juniors came back with tons of clothes from where they studied. I love seeing these truly rare pieces and getting to learn new trends.
