What are some of your biggest fashion inspirations?

I would wear a princess outfit to school almost every day. I wanted to be Fancy Nancy every day.

My childhood role models guide my fashion inspirations today. I was always obsessed with Fran Fine from the 90’s sitcom The Nanny. Her energy shone through her loud color choices, unique character style, and hilarious role in the show. Growing up in Upstate New York, I found Fran’s confidence inspiring. She pushed me to wear whatever I found stylish growing up, no matter the status quo. Similarly, my affinity for Fancy Nancy had my kindergarten teachers wondering which princess dress I would wear to school that day. I wore one anytime I was in class, at home, or asleep. I felt like a truer version of me in those dresses.

How has your upbringing impacted your sense of style today?

I felt amazing about my style; wearing anything a bit “different” in upstate New York made me feel like I must be the coolest person alive from here.

Encouraged and applauded are how I would describe people perceiving my fashion styles growing up.  I come from Saratoga Springs, a smaller town in New York. What I chose to wear never made me feel like an outlier, but a star. To locals, trying new trends I’d see online seemed like I’d made it all by myself. To support these endeavors, I’d get new items from some vintage markets and fairs Saratoga offered. The fairs were untapped vendors of unique, local pieces that inspire my thrifting and curating to this day.

As a Junior, what are some fashion changes you’ve seen on Tulane’s campus?

I didn’t have a lot of room in my suitcase to get clothes from abroad, but people are always sporting new pieces when they go back to campus.

With the new classes, I notice that people are really coming into their own style. Now that Tulane sees students from more states and countries, they are bringing their own culture and vibe. For the people who wear sweats and hoodies to class, I support that. For the people who doll themselves up with a cute, new look for class, I support that, too. Whatever makes you feel the most comfortable and confident floats my boat. I went abroad last semester, and my fellow Juniors came back with tons of clothes from where they studied. I love seeing these truly rare pieces and getting to learn new trends.

What are some of your favorite fashion accessories?

I wore contacts in high school, and then at freshman orientation, I woke up late and didn’t have time to put them in. People recognized me for my glasses from then on, and I haven’t stopped wearing them.

Glasses. Glasses. Glasses. Whenever I feel like I’m wearing a neutral outfit, I know my glasses will step up the look. They are the definition of function and fashion. I have tons of colorful frames, and sometimes, my friends won’t be able to spot me if I’m not wearing them. For the people who wear blue-light glasses, I would do it, too. My eyes hurt from staring at screens all day, so if they help your headaches and make you feel cute, then I’m all for it.

From your experience, what are some things people should wear for Mardi Gras?

Even though I’m from New York, I’ve become a victim of the February cold and left the parades early.

My #1 Tip: Be comfy for the parades. I love wearing crazy, strappy clothes to Mardi Gras events, especially for frat events. But I find that I don’t prepare well for the family-friendly parades. So, this year, I will make sure to bring a jacket that I can zip-up for the parades but be able to store it on campus. Mardi Gras is earlier than last year, which means it’s even colder. So make sure you can enjoy the traditions of mardi gras without shivering in your boots throughout the week.
