Are we Entering a More Expressive Era? Maximalism in NYFW 2026

Recent maximalism in fashion is not necessarily about leaving minimalism in the past, but about pushing beyond it, making room for individuality through colors, patterns, and statements.

Fashion is getting louder, and New York Fashion Week has made this difficult to ignore. Runways have shifted away from minimalist, classic style toward maximalism. Over the past year, designers have focused on timeless pieces and a return to basics. Though basics and timeless pieces are still a goal of many designers, NYC Fashion Week has begun to bring expressive designs back to life. Recent collections show that fashion is ready to make more noise.

Designers are trading quiet pieces for statements and muted colorways for bright, deep ones. Tory Burch is combining practicality with maximalism. Classic pieces are becoming more expressive. Color and texture made this a standout show. The collection used greens, blues, purples, and yellows to enhance the mood of the pieces. Burch’s collection had a depth that truly represented this connection between maximalism and feminist messages. Many aspects of the show drew on the idea that a wardrobe is collected over time, layered, and used to make statements. The feminine ability to layer aesthetics was a beautiful element of Burch’s show.

The recent NYFW Carolina Herrera show emphasized similar designs. WWD described it as a "chic but playful" show. Herrera's show featured a plethora of patterns with a feminine, whimsical feel. As Carolina Herrera celebrated its 45th anniversary, the collection highlighted standout elements, from polka dots to bold textures. The show celebrated diversity, where a woman could find a piece to suit herself (W Magazine). Herrera's collection demonstrates that women don't have to stray away from elegance. Instead, familiar pieces can become more expressive and expensive through exaggerated accessories and colors.

Today, there is a strong focus on trends. Social media has accelerated trends that come and go. Aesthetics change and disappear at a much faster pace than we have seen in the past. It seems there is now a desire for stronger individuality in the fashion world, with nostalgic and unique pieces making a comeback. This raises the question: is maximalism just clothing or a form of individuality? Who knows if this is gonna stick if it's nearly another trend participating in the cycle. Either way, it’s no secret that maximalism is the talk of fashion week as we speak.
