Palatable Thanksgiving Dinner Outfits

It’s Thanksgiving break. You’re going home to see your family: mom, dad, your beloved siblings, and your uptight grandparents. Your closet consists of “raunchy and distasteful” mini skirts and tank tops - all of which slightly smell of the Boot. What do I wear to Thanksgiving dinner that isn’t just “jeans and a sweater?” How do I convey “I’m a hard-working Tulane student?”

The solution: business casual - with an emphasis on business. Looking chic and trendy without all your skin being out is possible! I’m not talking ‘office siren’ at Thanksgiving dinner, but it's possible to be comfy, trendy, and cute all at the same time, all while looking palatable (and impressive) to the older members of your family!

Here are some of TU Fashion’s favorite outfit ideas for your (possibly dreaded) family gathering!

Pair light-toned slacks with a high-neck top! This, with a pair of black kitten heels, a dainty necklace, and a simple belt (and possibly a half-up, half-down hairstyle), makes the perfect palatable chic outfit.

Another combination in the “clean business girl” realm could be slacks and a structured top. Something that gives you shape while still maintaining clean lines with the look: golden.

So what if you aren’t a slacks girly? More into skirts? Plaid is in season! A plaid skirt, black top, and some stockings and heels/loafers will entirely elevate your Thanksgiving look. Wear a statement necklace to make the outfit eclectic, et voilà!

Make your heels stand out with a monochrome look on top (think black, greys, or beiges) and bright red heels on the bottom. You can even make it more “Blair Waldorf” with a headband (you have to make the famous Waldorf pumpkin pie if you do this step!)

What else is in? I’m so glad you asked.

Boots! Scarves! Sweater dresses! The list goes on. A short heeled boot can step in (see what I did there?) for any pair of heels if you haven’t gotten a pedicure in a minute. Wearing a skirt, but you aren’t into stockings? Knee-high boots are the solution, my friend. Don’t want to put together an entire outfit? Sweater dress, belt, boots, statement jewelry, done.

Whether you’re dreading Thanksgiving or excited to see your loved ones, we hope this helped you have an idea of what to wear, even if you don’t know how you’ll tolerate your “almond mom aunt.”
